Moonstone Beach is a local treasure in Humboldt County, a classic hang spot and a classic beer. Dominant roasted coffee notes strike the palate head on followed by a robust, dark chocolate finish when delving into this traditional English style Porter. These sweet, smooth profiles are balanced by a subtle bitterness from the malt’s roasting process, and further accentuated by its blend of whole Pacific Northwest hop cones.

I had to wait 10 minutes for the head to recede. Lots of coffee in the nose. The taste is of coffee and sweet cocoa with a bitter finish. A fairly standard porter.

On tap at the brewpub. Revisited with a can from the brewery in June 2024.

Appearance: A very attractive and creamy tan head leaves plenty of sticky lacing. Clear but nearly opaque dark brown body.

Aroma: mix of medium- and dark-malts with a touch of coffee.

Flavor: Moderate hop presence for the style with a mix of medium- and dark-malts with dark chocolate and a touch of coffee.

Feel: light-medium body with medium soft carbonation.

Overall: well-crafted. Sits between a traditional and a robust porter.

Pours an almost opaque super dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is fairly subdued with dark roasted malt, char, and slight cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer that is drinkable, but nothing very memorable for the style.
