Strong Rope Brewery "Falling Squirrel #5 Vienna"
on tap at the brewery on 6 March 2016
$6/pint
I really hate writing "bad" reviews, so let me first start by saying that I've enjoyed every other beer I've had from Strong Rope, and this appears to have just been a batch gone wrong.
I think it only natural to assume that it's done in the Vienna lager style, whether it be an ale or lager, given their use of the word "Vienna", but it doesn't truly fit that style in any way other than maltiness (which is too full anyway).
Firstly, it's not very clear; although it's lighter color is actually correct according to historical records as per "Vienna-Märzen-Oktoberfest" by George & Laurie Fix, 1991.
Secondly, at just 3.6% ABV it's not strong enough to be a Vienna-style lager (or ale-brewed version of such).
Thirdly, the listed Mt. Hood hops don't fit the bill, nor are they strong enough within the flavor to equal the balance required of the style. The beer should be malty, but equally balanced by bitterness.
And that's where it fails, it's simply under-attenuated. It's malty to the point of being wort-like, and what hop flavors are there barely come through. Regardless, the balance is off.
I'm sure at their scale of production versus sales, this will be gone before you read this; and that's probably the only reason it made it to the taps anyway. Try almost any of their other beers and you should be happy.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
