Citra, Citra, Citra has the distinction of being the inaugural pour into a Pretentious Glass Company Founder's Series IIPA glass. And what a pretty sight it is! One inch of dense, pure white head almost forms a meringue as it lingers for several long minutes. Thick patches of lace cling like ornaments to the glass above a dull murky haze of orange. The beer glows opaque when put to light with a halo that quickly becomes overwhelmed by the murky orange beer.
The aroma has strong and sweet grapefruit contrasted by pine straw. Some light, cut grass finds its place as well.
The flavor is quite bitter and the hops are muddy. The aroma seems to have been left behind as earthy hops, grass, and straw dominate. It has a long finish that has a modest bitterness and mild astringency. Warmth detracts from the flavor.
Alcohol is in line with the label expectations. The carbonation is soft and fizzy within the medium to full body. It has a texture similar to velour.
Citra, Citra, Citra is distinctly a West Coast approach, and aside from muddiness, it is well done. This one feels more like an autumn beer, even though I am drinking it on a cold winter day. I prefer my citrus hops to be more fresh and bright, and, nevertheless, appreciate this trade with Dave.
