No Belgian brewery is complete without a “Dubbel”, and so we’ve been working on adding one to our collection. The Dubbel style beer originates from the Trappist abbey in Westmalle, where it is still brewed today. Dubbel (double) refers to the higher alcohol content, ours being at the modest end of the scale at 6.5% alc/vol. Our Dubbel has a deep brown-red colour. At once, this beer greets you with a sweet caramel aroma. The sweet berry, dark fruit, and slightly nutty flavours are well balanced with a subdued malt taste and a bit of sourness.

Like our other beers the base for this brew is Pilsner malts. The colour and flavour profile comes mostly from the dark candi sugar which was caramelised right here in the brewery.

500 mL Bottle. ABV 7.5%.
Appearance: Red/Brown, Under half a finger of beige head, Little retention, Creamy collar remains.
Aroma: Dark fruit (maybe plum?), Caramel, Toffee, Generic cola.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, Above medium carbonation, Feels strange.
Flavour: Dark fruit (maybe plum?), Stale generic cola, slight toffee.
Overall: Can you make a good Belgian Dubbel outside Belgium? I'm not convinced. I appreciate the effort and I'm willing to try things once, but I don't have to try them twice.

Appearance: Poured with a finger of head that quickly retreated to a half finger but stayed there for a good long time. Not much in the way of lacing which was disappointing. The body is a deep opaque brown, although with just the right light, you are treated to a beautiful crimson note that lets you peak at the strong carbonation.

Smell: Plum is the dominant scent here, backed by a strong molasses and toffee malt and the barest hints of cocoa. It didn't need warming, but it really amps up it's potency as it does warm up.

Taste: Starts with a restrained molasses and bready malt with a hint of cocoa that really amps up as the chocolate aspect meshes with plum and a hint of cherry and berry notes till the barest touch of an earthy hop makes slight touch to sweep the palate clean. It's like milder black forest cake, with a hint of plum with the slight rum touch that I find in rum cake.

Mouthfeel: Plum and chocolate aftertaste that is actually somewhat regrettably mild, as the beer is nice on the palate. I get why though, as I could see the sweeter aspects overwhelming and building at this stage. Carbonation does start to fall a bit flat around the 2/3rd done mark, but helps out the entire beer while it is there, as does the transitioning.

Drinkability: Medium bodied, and settled down very well, and does a great job of only offering the smallest hint of it's higher abv. Refreshing as well, and approachable which I find is an issue with so many of this style.

Final Thoughts: For the longest time, I've long wanted a brewer in Ontario to brew Belgian styles. This offering makes a very strong case for them being the best Belgian brewer in our province. This is a great dessert beer, but I could also see it working as a fall to winter drinker. Looking forward to their other offerings in my fridge.

I actually thought I lifted the brewer's Belgian Blonde out of the store's fridge (which is an okay beer), but instead I bought a growler of this. I was disappointed, as I knew that no one outside of Belgium is capable of making good Dubbel, Tripel or Quadrupel. Not one brewery. And, try as New Limburg obviously has, they couldn't quite pull it off either.
This is a poor man's Dubbel.
There it is: the disappearing head, the nose barely noticeable and the cheapness stamp of thin, metallic taste.
Is it drinkable? Sure. You could do worse, in fact this is one of the better attempts. But I won't buy it again. Why would I, when I can buy the real stuff?

Bought a 500mL bottle from the brewery retail store. Nice place and worth the visit. Allowed beer to warm and served in a chalice as per guidelines on label. It took gold in the Ontario Brewing Awards 2017.
L: Dark, reddish brown with off-white head crackling on pouring. Head sinks back quickly but remains around edge of glass.
S: Beautiful caramel, malty nose greets you.
T: Sweet and robust. Sweet caramel and a flavour I'm having a difficult time naming. Alcohol warmth on finish.
F: Subdued carbonation lets the flavours come forth. Dry on the tongue.
O: Overall I'm impressed by this small, countryside brewery. Can see why it would merit a gold medal. Could close my eyes and be in Belgium.

500 ml bottle served fairly cold into a Innis & Gunn flute glass. Thanks to Rob for this tasting.

Appearance - Dark cloudy mahogany colored beer with some nice light tan head and lacing. Just enough clarity to see that this is well carbonated.

Smell - Nose is rather muted initially, opens to some dark fruit and molasses afterwards.

Taste - Big bold caramel and molasses flavors through. Some fine grain. Easy drinking beer that gets better after repeated sipping.

Mouthfeel - Smooth with highly expressive carbonation. Body is moderate but on the light end of the dubbel scale.

Overall - A pretty good dubbel from an upstart brewery in Simcoe. Looking forward to trying their other Belgian offerings.
