I had this beer on-tap in a tulip at the brewery. Optimism doesn't advertise their intended beer style, so I added this as an altbier because that's what it tastes like.
Appearance: rich amber with a moderate haze and a finger of frothy light tan foam. Attractive indeed!
Smell: sweet and malty with a bready character backed by a little toffee. Not bad.
Taste: bready, toasty and malty with a decent bitterness toward the end. I don't always love the style, but this is pretty good.
Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a good carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: I find it odd to rate an amber/altbier so high, but this beer is really working for me.
