Celebrating five years since we began this wonderfully unique adventure.
Inspired by the traditional brewing methods from Belgium's Flanders region, FIVE was brewed and blended to create this rich and fruity sour beer. We combined ales aged in our foeders for eighteen months before refermenting the blend on cherries and raspberries. This process has resulted in a very complex and acidic beer, with notes of dark fruit, spicy oak, and chocolate.

Very dark red-brown color. Poured a short head that dropped down to a patchy brown skiff after a minute. Too dark to see the carbonation level. Left small dots of lacing, but most of the lace slid back down the glass to the surface.
Dense sour funk with a strong plum/gooseberry smell similar to many West Coast Cabernet Franc red wines. Light undertone of malt. Swirling the glass kicked up a light barnyard and more of the gooseberry.
Slightly sweet flavor more like cherries than expected from the plum scent. Mix of sour flavors that fade in and out. Despite the 0 IBU rating, this has a sharp bitter edge that tastes more like the skin of gooseberries than hops; possibly scorched fruit. Sour flavors show up again after some of the bitter has faded. A strong black pepper flavor shows up towards the end; this had a bit of a burn. The aftertaste has an astringency layered on the sour funk, bitter gooseberry, and pepper. The aftertaste fades quickly, leaving a bit of the cherry and gooseberry to linger.
Some sharp tongue tingling, but it fades quickly. Doesn't foam up very much. A bit astringent at the start of the aftertaste and then again much later.
Very complex scent and flavor. The flavor continually evolved as it warmed in my mouth. To me this tasted more like a fruited Oude Gueuze Lambic than like a Flanders Red like Rodenbach. I'm not sure that the 650 ml bottle was the best choice - anybody solo drinking this may have their taste buds burn out before they can finish. Best to share with a friend who has similar tastes.
