On draft

Pours a nice finger and a half head into a willi glass. Head is off white, and quite frothy, looks nice. Good retention so far. Body is black. Overall this is a good looking beer so far.

Nose is predominately dry, nice characteristic lager yeast aromas, mineral-y. Small notes of dark chocolate. Extremely light hops ate hidden in here. Not really roasty at all. Overall very simple, but very good, extremely clean and exactly what a German schwartz should smell like.

First thing I notice on the flavor is that it has some definite roasty flavors. Very moderate, and in no way too much, just the perfect amount. Definitely dry, but the flavor is more robust and full compared to the nose, so you don't notice the dryness as much. Light chocolate is here as well. Maybe just the slightest bit bitter, but not barely, it's mostly just the dryness. This is a great flavor, nothing flashy, but it's perfect for the style.

Mouthfeel is light bodied, as it should be. While it is not heavy, it's also not paper thin or watery, it's a good balance. Carbonation is medium. Perfect mouthfeel.

The drinkability is stellar. It's light bodied and very tasty.

The appearance turned out great. Head retention was above average, and I got thick lacing all the way down the glass.

Overall this is exactly what a schwartz should be. Nothing crazy, but super clean and very solid all around. If there was anything it could improve, I'm not sure, perhaps a slightly bigger flavor? I hesitate even saying that because this is quite on point. Overall, stellar.

On tap at the brewpub in Eugene.

A: a weak tan head leaves minimal sticky lacing. Clear but nearly opaque dark brown.

Aroma: mix of medium- and dark-malts with a hint of toffee.

Flavor: Mix of medium- and dark-malts with a faint note of light-roasted coffee. Faint hop presence.

Feel: near medium body with medium soft carbonation.

O: OK version of the style.
