decent beer in terms of trueness to style, but its awfully light as they go, and somewhat underwhelming. a pale amber color, well short of the usual toasted dark reddish brown color we usually look for in the style, but the head is right on, off white, but tall and fizzy. some copper to caramelized malts in the grain bill, that part might be simple, but its not necessarily lacking. instead, its the overall weight of it, and the yeast flavor and consequent depth that i am missing from this one. as an introductory belgian amber i think its just fine, not fermented too warm, well enough constructed, but as a dubbel, its missing some of the richness, structure, complexity, and bigness i need in this type of beer. favors meld well, minerals, belgian yeast, and some subtle dried fruits, but this almost does to dubbel what session does to ipa. hard to critique a beer as carefully crafted as this, but they need to ramp it up a few levels to get it where it needs to be. along with the hefe, this was one of the least relevant beers we had here. most of what they make is outstanding...
