Pint on draught at the brewery. It pours a cloudy, dirty orange color with a creamy, bright white head and clinging lacing. The smell includes sweet malt and bitter citrus. There is not much pine on the nose. The taste opens fairly sweet and malt-forward but it's quickly balanced by tart - almost sour - lemon and grapefruit. The anticipated resinous pine is subdued at best. There is little hop bitterness. This ale is thick and creamy with moderate carbonation and the 8.5% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, Double Header is a bit of an enigma: it's not a classic West Coast IPA because it lacks strong, resinous pine. It's also not typical of the "southern" style because it has lots of citrus. It's a nice beer but when it comes to Slack Tide West Coast IPAs I prefer Intracoastal.
