I had this on draught at Passion Vines in Somers Point. 12 oz. pour served in a tulip glass. It pours nearly black with mahogany hues when held to the light, and a finger of foamy, mocha-colored lacing that dissipated quickly but left considerable lacing on the glass. The nose features roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and nuts. This is a good, basic American Stout without adjuncts: there is abundant burnt coffee grounds, nuts, and baker's chocolate. There is no discernible sweetness. The finish is mildly bitter. For a 5.3% Stout, Monkey Face is surprisingly rich and creamy, with moderate carbonation. If there is such a thing as a "session stout," then this would qualify. Overall, I am really impressed at this offering from a new South Jersey brewery. Monkey Face reminds me a lot of Carton's Unjunct (which is highly regarded), albeit with a lower ABV. Very nicely done!
