Fresh crowler from brewery. Poured into Slack Tide tulip glass. It pours a deep cola color with a finger of foamy, ecru-colored head and lacing. A rather subdued nose with sweet malt, peat, and subtle caramel. The taste opens with sweet malt and subtle caramel followed by a strong dose of smoky peat and tobacco. There is also a distinct hoppy bitterness at the finish. The taste is smokier, and more bitter, than Dirty Bastard, Scotty Karate, Claymore, and some of the other Wee Heavies I've had. For that reason alone, I'm really liking it. It has a rich mouth feel with moderate carbonation, and a punchy 8.2% ABV that sneaks up on you during the second pour. Overall, I commend Slack Tide for brewing a somewhat rare style and creating a unique and really pleasing one.
