Pint on draught at the brewery. It pours a beautiful dark amber with cola hues, and a half finger of creamy, light khaki-colored head and a thin sheen of lacing. On the nose there is caramel, earthy nuts, and whiffs of leather, peat, and tobacco. The taste opens with a notes of sweet caramel but they are quickly supplanted by earthy burnt peat and char. The finish is decidedly bitter. However, as the glass warms there is additional malt sweetness. It has a creamy mouth feel with lively carbonation. It's dry and crisp with an easy drinking 5.7% ABV. Overall, this is a very well-crafted American Red Ale. The sweetness and earthy bitterness are nicely balanced. It would stand up well to a burger, steak sandwich or grilled sausage, and it's equally appropriate for casual drinking. Slack Tide should be very proud of this offering.
