Special release for Slack Tide's 5th Anniversary. It was recommended not to drink it until 1/15/2021. Poured into a tulip glass. It pours a deep mahogany with dark cola hues. The light mocha head disappeared almost instantly. The fragrant nose features chocolate, coffee, and hints of dark fruit. The smell of the bourbon is subdued but noticeable. The chocolate flavor is really nice - like in the base stout - and there are also notes of freshly-brewed coffee, black cherry, nuts, and earthy char. As with the smell the bourbon is evident but it's subdued and doesn't overpower the flavors from the base stout. There is little bitterness. The mouth feel is less viscous than I'd hoped. And it's less creamy than the base stout (at lease the last time I had it). It's lightly-carbonated and you can feel the 11.5% ABV. It should be sipped slowly, as I did with a plate of sharp cheese and apple. Overall, this is very good and enjoyable but I was actually more impressed with the base stout which has now been canned (I had it in a growler). I wish I had done a side-by-side comparison. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the BA version and would drink it again.
