16-ounce can purchased at the Tanasbourne Town Center location of New Seasons Market in Hillsboro, OR. Date stamp reads "CANNED ON 01/28/26". Enjoyed in a small Becher glass.

Look:
Copper body with orange highlights and an unexpected cloudiness. The cap of fluffy cream-colored foam displays good retention and spawns terrific lacing.

Smell:
The nose is toasty and bready with moderate sweetness and well-integrated smoke. There's also a pinch of sulfur and a mild but unwelcome trace of butter.

Taste:
Fortunately, that buttery note is nowhere to be found in the flavor. The sweetness matches the nose, and is backed with a nice toasted bread character. The smoke component is stronger on the palate than in the nose. It is more woody than meaty, delivering an obtrusive tangy smack through the middle. Nutty malt comes through as the tangy note fades, along with delicate floral hops.

Feel:
Medium-bodied with assertive carbonation and a lightly astringent finish.

Overall:
I do like the malt character and the prominent smokiness. But the body is hazy, the nose has some notes I don't care for, and the sour tang through the middle is distracting and disagreeable. This is a good but not great rauchbier. A rare disappointment from Rosenstadt.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 1/28/26.

Appearance: rich copper color with a totally clear body and a finger of frothy tan foam. I just think that color is great!

Smell: sweetish, bready malt with a nicely pronounced smokiness. Not a ton of complexity, necessarily, but it has a level of smoke that I rather like.

Taste: bready, toasty malt, with a ponounced smokiness. I feel like the smoke is a little less balanced here in the flavor than in the aroma, though.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: a perfectly cromulent rauchbier. For me, I think the flavor leans a little bit too heavily into the smoke, at least in comparison to the aroma.

A good, balanced rauchbier that's assertively spicy/bitter in the classic Franconian sense.
Arrives with a dense, beige foam that has above average retention. Lacing is very good, with thick webbing clinging to most sides of the glass. Body is a somewhat-light amber orange hue, with light bringing out red-orange hues (SRM 16-34). Transparent.
Aroma of dominant beechwood-smoked maltiness, light phenolic spicy accents, and a hint of toasted malt/light-colored caramel malt in the very far background.
Flavor is quite good, of balanced smokiness (less than 50%, but probably 40% of flavor is smokiness) mixed with a notable smooth, lightly toasted and/or caramel malt backbone, and moderate hop spiciness with light hop bitterness; no apparent roasted malt. Front: moderate smoked malt (grass and wood smoke, some smoked meat) with toasted malt and some light-colored caramel malt in the back as supporting flavor. Mid: continued moderate smoke character mixed with continued light-colored caramel, moderate spiciness, and moderate bitterness. Back: moderate smoked malt (grass and wood smoke, some smoked meat) dominating lightly toasted malt, modest hop spiciness and bitterness. After: lingering bitterness and spiciness, lingering smoked malt with faint hints of toasted and caramel malt character/sweetness.
Beer is medium to medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, resulting in a mostly foamy, somewhat smooth mouthfeel. Closes dry, with medium stickiness on the lips and palate.
