A good, balanced rauchbier that's assertively spicy/bitter in the classic Franconian sense.
Arrives with a dense, beige foam that has above average retention. Lacing is very good, with thick webbing clinging to most sides of the glass. Body is a somewhat-light amber orange hue, with light bringing out red-orange hues (SRM 16-34). Transparent.
Aroma of dominant beechwood-smoked maltiness, light phenolic spicy accents, and a hint of toasted malt/light-colored caramel malt in the very far background.
Flavor is quite good, of balanced smokiness (less than 50%, but probably 40% of flavor is smokiness) mixed with a notable smooth, lightly toasted and/or caramel malt backbone, and moderate hop spiciness with light hop bitterness; no apparent roasted malt. Front: moderate smoked malt (grass and wood smoke, some smoked meat) with toasted malt and some light-colored caramel malt in the back as supporting flavor. Mid: continued moderate smoke character mixed with continued light-colored caramel, moderate spiciness, and moderate bitterness. Back: moderate smoked malt (grass and wood smoke, some smoked meat) dominating lightly toasted malt, modest hop spiciness and bitterness. After: lingering bitterness and spiciness, lingering smoked malt with faint hints of toasted and caramel malt character/sweetness.
Beer is medium to medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, resulting in a mostly foamy, somewhat smooth mouthfeel. Closes dry, with medium stickiness on the lips and palate.
