A very good sticke alt, Portland's best kept "secret" in German beer is from Rosenstadt brewery (currently serving out of the Olympia Provisions Public House).
Arrives with a pale, off-white to light beige foam, that fades in average time to a thick ring around the glass and a large island of foam atop the body of the beer. Lacing is excellent, with thick washes and dots clinging to the sides of the glass. Body is a very dark chestnut brown, with light bringing out copper brown hues. Transparent.
Aroma is complex, of sweet, rich, toasted nuts, toasted malt, very dark caramel, and chocolate character with a hint of slight smoke/tobacco/musty basement.
Flavor is as complex as the aroma, of toasted nuts, very dark caramel, toasted malts, modestly assertive hop bitterness and spiciness, hints of chocolate, and some tobacco/smoke. Front: toasted nuts, very dark caramel, hints of roasted malt and spicy hop character. Mid: smooth, sweet, malty; accents of very dark caramel, toasted nuts, chocolate, and tobacco/smoke; moderate bitterness. Back: more obvious dark caramel, hints of tobacco/smoke, roasted malt/chocolate; moderate to medium-strong bitterness that's neutral to spicy in character. After: lingering hints of very dark caramel with undertones of toasted nuts/milk chocolate; lingering moderate bitterness that's clean to lightly spicy in character.
Beer is medium bodied, with carbonation of moderate intensity (2.4-2.5 vol CO2). Closes dry, with medium to medium-light stickiness on the palate and lips.
