Stepping into unexplored territory in the craft beer universe is always a thrill. Today, I had the pleasure of immersing myself in the Timber Pale Ale, a unique creation from the renowned Lumber House Brewery. Served at a refreshing 42 degrees in a Belcher glass, the pour revealed a frothy, two-fingered, off-white, foamy, and rocky head. The head retention is excellent, leaving a beautiful lacing on the glass. The beer's appearance is a lovely amber color with a golden hue, charting on SRM 6 (a scale that measures the color of beer, with 1 being pale yellow and 40+ being black). The cloudy clarity adds to its unique appeal. In summary, the Timber Pale Ale offers a visual experience that is truly exceptional.
Oh wow, the beer has an off-flavor; it smells like cooked cabbage, which is not a desirable characteristic in a beer. Nosing the glass again, I smell toasted malts and a mild hop profile. The hops are orange and floral. However, the cooked vegetable aromas dominate the palate.
The cabbage flavor has somewhat subsided, allowing me to delve deeper into the beer. The hop profile, while muted, presents hints of orange, floral blossoms, and a light herbal touch. The malt profile is bready, with toasted malts. However, it's a challenge to fully appreciate these flavors when the off-flavor dominates the palate, making the tasting experience a struggle.
The mouthfeel is astringent and finishes dry. The body is medium and has medium carbonation, which gives it a lively and effervescent feel on the palate.
Regrettably, this beer is marred by off-flavors, which significantly hinder its enjoyability. I had high hopes for a delightful experience, but unfortunately, I could not bring myself to finish this beer. I'm genuinely sorry to report this disappointing outcome.
