Disclaimer: Not really a steam beer like Anchor would have you think, but a reinvention of the German original (dampf=German for "steam"). So what's the big difference. German dampfbiers are made with ale yeast. A very good article about this can be found http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/Dampfbier.html

To my tasting:
Deep gold-light orange with flourishes of amber. Hazy body capped with sizable white head. Loopy lacing.

Smell and tastewise the beer is much more like a maltier hefeweizen. The smell/taste belie this with moderately strong banana phenols, scant bubblegum. Noted some toastiness with some caramel malt. Super fine carbonation, medium body.  A very flavorful,  but refreshing beer for the summer. Rare style to find, and I enjoyed it a lot.
