American black coffee IPA brewed with Carrier Roasting Co. beans. Is it a hoppy American Stout or Porter or is it a Black IPA? Whatever it is, it's exactly what you want. We brewed this dark ale with a the base of a stout in mind. Loads of specialty malt give this beer a dark appearance and perceived notes of coffee and chocolate. We then hopped this with a large amount of pine and citrus forward hops to bring it more towards the IPA style. We heavily dry hopped it and rested it on over 2 lbs / bbl of Carrier Roasting Co. Burundi Ninga whole coffee beans. It's not a style, it's just a great beer.

This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a black color with an off white foamy finger's worth of head that dissipated at a fairly slow pace. Not much lace.
The aroma had some coffee ground up front with a nice melding of piney bitterness and then delving into some dark chocolate nibs and a delicate citrus rind.
The flavor was moderately sweet pulling in the bitterness and roastiness all up in there with an ample amount of dark chocolate embracing it just before the aftertaste occurs which was somewhat coffee ground to dark chocolate.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a steady sipping quality about it as some of the pine and citrus bitterness did end up showing some harsh effects rolling over my tongue. Finish was definitely reminiscent of a Black IPA - piney, roasty and citrusy.
Overall, very nice Black IPA as that's what I would say this is. It's not an American IPA, I know that.
