After brewing a massive imperial stout for the winter season, we took our second runnings of liquid and made a crazy beer with them. We ran the wort into our open fermenter and kettle-soured it for two days with a pitch of lactobacillus. We then finished the beer with a light hopping and pushed it directly into our fermenter on top of the majority of the found fruit and donated berries for the harvest season. This beer is dark in color but light and tart on the palate. It has a light ruby red hue and is really unlike most other beers on the market. We think you will like our take on this old style of Belgian-style sour beer.

Taster at The Reservoir Waterbury.
Slightly hazy deep red brown with a minimal head. Tart lemon and light cherry with bits of sweet caramel malt and bits of earthy funk. Light vinegar rounds this out. Decent, but needs a little work.

Poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a dark brown color with a slim white cap of a little foaminess, not much lace.
The aroma had a dried sweet to sour woody character over top of some earthy to grassy notes. Some berry sweet and tartness came in to round out the edges. Sour character pushes in further underneath, somewhat lemon-like.
The flavor was moderately sour cutting in on the sweet wood, berries and lemon and developed a sly spice to amplify a fantastic overall taste. Moderate aftertaste of the sweet dried to sour-like woodiness with a slight earthy spice.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a substantial sipping quality about it. Though the spice doesn't invoke any distracting harshness, somehow, I want to say that the body weight seemed to cause me to want to sip more. Carbonation felt on par. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, I think I liked this more for me, but to be a Flanders Oud Bruin, I'm not so sure. It's an interesting one and nice to try during the Autumn season.
