As we continue to wish for Fall in Vermont to begin, we begin to start thinking about malt forward beers that are perfect for crisp days and cold nights. With this idea in mind we designed the perfect season crossover beer. This American Brown ale leads with the malt character with a variety of specialty malts. It has just enough hop character to provide another slight citrus note and the coffee rounds it out too delicious fall brown ale. Post-fermentation we added right around 2 lbs per barrel of Carrier Roasting Co. Mexican Chiapas whole bean coffee. When we first experienced this coffee it screamed huge notes of cocoa and chocolate with a slight spice character and we thought it was perfect for this beer.

Poured into a clear mug.
The appearance was a dark brown color with a two finger eggshell white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Some mild lace ran here and there.
The aroma had a nice blend of sweet to roasty coffee tones up front and then a delicate earthy spice with a little bit of clean caramel/toffee malts. Slight nuttiness underneath and ended with an even slighter grassy hop effect.
The flavor was moderately sweet through the coffee, caramel/toffee malts and then a light cocoa bean at the end. Earthy spice was quaint but there. Aftertaste was slightly leaning into the coffee, caramel and nuts.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt on par. Nice smooth to roasty sliding grip along my tongue.
Overall, very nicely done modernized American brown ale. Coffee brown ale fans should seek this one.
