355 mL slim can from Superstore; dated Mar 30 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Foggy and translucent, with a beautiful reddish fuchsia-coloured body; a deliberately rough pour mustered a quarter inch of loose, bubbly white head that quickly disintegrated. A thin collar and some cirrus-like wisps of film are all that remain - looks fine to me. It smells intensely of raspberry juice, with notes of grape must, hibiscus, and musty funkiness also coming through. Very enticing.
An intriguing beer that starts off with rather bold flavours (particularly for 4.5%), but finishes on a much lighter note. Puckering lemony sourness and raspberry juice tartness at the forefront, followed by tannic hints of raspberry seeds; I'm getting not only lactic acidity, but also a touch of vinegar/acetic acidity. Grape skin tannins and hibiscus round out the back end, which is tart and a little fruity-sweet; the aftertaste is similar, but trends dry. Light in body, with low carbonation that weakly nudges the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth, slightly flat mouthfeel that works ok here. This is a highly quaffable sour - I finished my glass easily, and could've easily enjoyed another can right afterwards.
Final Grade: 4.19, an impressive A-. The Exchange's & Rosa is a step above many of the other Ontario fruit sours you'll find at the LCBO these days, and well worth its price tag if you enjoy raspberry wild ales or kettle sours. This one's combination of raspberry, hibiscus, grape and sour/funk is delightful from start to finish - I just cannot recommend this beer highly enough. I don't go to Superstore to buy beer very often, but I definitely need to head back to grab a few more cans - I'm assuming this is a summer seasonal-type deal, and I'd like to have a few more cans on hand for later this year.
