Maiz Azul begins with carefully and responsibly sourced native blue corn from the Meseta Purepecha in Michoacan. The people of this region, considered by many to be the origin of corn, continue to cultivate the native corn as they have for over 7000 years. Traditional “milpas”, a mixed crop plantation, are still maintained using ancestral methods. Sadly, these traditional methods are being abandoned and the need to preserve the “milpas” and the astounding food biodiversity they contain, becomes increasingly urgent.

In La Bru we source our corn from the Tierra Vivente collective, which works with generational producers to gain organic certification for their “milpas” and find market opportunities in which the value of their unique product is truly recognized. The vision of this product is to positively contribute to the preservation of Michoacan’s milpas by working closely with the farmers to create sustainable market opportunities for their native corn and share its exceptional flavors with the world.

I'm not suggesting a styling change, but I like thinking of Maiz as a saison. After all, the style allows the malt bill to have motley mix of grains. And Maiz was suitable at the table; soft in my mouth, yet cleansing. However, Azul is not hoppy; and saisons are. Hence, I protest its styling not. But I remind everyone, Spotted Cow was a Cream Ale for the longest time and it, too, was re-styled as a saison partly because it had corn.

Azul has a very very active foam, farmhouse like and hard to control... and it stays foamy, lots of protein swirls working the malt... like a good saison yeast. Smells are "meh", but Tastes are integrated (yet could use a few hops more, something I rarely say.) Soft, even creamy. You decide.

As for my micro-review.... UnTappd lists 33 beers from La Bru and 5,568 unique ratings. While I can't discern how many are in the U.S., I'm impressed that La Bru's importer got Maiz into Chicagoland. La Bru's website is basic for being over seven years old. But they are surviving and still pushing all the good-guy buttons of local sourcing and slow cooking and quality ales. And for doing all that to preserve/create culture in a not-so-cosmopolitan state within Mexico, I give La Bru very good Overall Hugs.

A: The beer is rather hazy light amber in color. It poured with a short white head that left a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of corn are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is dominated by flavors of corn and has hints of sweetness along with a light amount of bitterness from the hops.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is packed with lots of aromas and flavors of corn, but in a good way compared to an adjunct lager.

Bought a single at Liquor Shed. I can't find a date on the 11.2 ounce bottle.

It pours a clear gold with an initial inch of foam. It does last a while.

It smells of corn, malty, some sweetness, no bitterness.

Very corny taste, overwhelming the malty character, some sweetness, some vegetal like flavours.

Light bodied.

Pretty poor beer in my book.

This one pours a dark and clear orange color, with a small head and lots of lacing.

This smells like lemony/floral hops, sweet and crisp corn, and a bit of breadiness.

This is pretty basic and simple, but definitely well brewed. That corn adds a nice subtle sweetness, and really just crisps up the whole thing. There's a very light floral and slightly lemony hop character, and a slight crackery and bready malt character.

This is light bodied, crisp, clean, and very drinkable, with a smooth and clean finish.

I really like the idea behind this one, and it's well executed.
