It was a pleasant surprise to visit Pivnica Star Grad Old Town Brewery, Skopje, Macedonia, and to see that they are not only brewing their own stuff (they hadn't been the last time I was here) but that they had three different types of IPAs! (An unknown style in this region)
I chose the single IPA "The Man". It pours a golden copper and murky color. A moderate head leaves a creamy film that retains well.
Nice aroma that includes floral hops, biscuit malt, apricot and grapefruit pulp.
Medium bodied with a grainy malt feel that smooths out as the drink warms. The carbonation is moderate. Taste of grapefruit pith, pine needle and herbal hops. A modest coating of sweetness from the malts, however, overall the palate is dry and relatively bitter. The finish is slightly chalky and dry.
I'm impressed that the IPA has finally hit Macedonia and would love for it to become more widely available. To boot, this was a good representation of the style.
