My second beer on tap at Pivnica Star Grad Old Town Brewery, Skopje, Macedonia, was "Chimney " described as a Munich Helles Rauchbier on the menu.
It poured a dark copper amber color with a slight film that showed ok retention.
In the aroma there is a sweetness redolent of chocolate and dark caramel, perhaps more porter like. I don't really get wood like or smoked malt aromas.
However, in the taste I get more of a smoked malt flavor. Medium bodied, even somewhat thin. The finish is dry. There is a modest noble hops spiciness that adds some character. Not particularly robust or complex in flavors, rather, it is quite clean and light.
I added this beer and was unsure whether to categorize it as a Munich Helles or Rauchbier, although I read that there are brewing traditions that allow variations in smoked beers. I was really missing the barbecue/bacon quality of Rauchbier, although I suppose the Munich Dunkel side makes it cleaner. Overall, at least it's drinkable, albeit unremarkable, and pairs well with barbecue or smoked meats.
