Now over ten years old, Carrieres is a great example of what makes Belgians and their brewing so interesting.
Their website may be among the most artistic I've seen. (Although I wouldn't mind more practical information, like the restaurant menu so I can see what to pair with their ales.) But truly a lovely venture that does all the right things we like about brewing: friendship, farm-to-kettle-to-table, sustainability, tradition. Isolated near the French border, I'm glad this micro found its way into the bar at my Brussels hotel.
This is a soft Blonde and worth having again. Its Looks, Smells and Tastes remind closely of several blondes I've just had that are from Brussels' nanos. The big foam that sticks around, the muted malt, the shy but lingering hops and, most important, that soft mouth. All are present in Diole, a real farmhouse ale. All of which tells me that my theory is worth following for more study: that the farmhouse ale is now being brewed in the collective nanos of Brussels, making it the next epicenter of Belgian brewing. But that's all theory. Enjoy the now. A Sante' !

L- Very pale straw, probably amongst the say 2% of palest beers I've ever seen. Took a long time to pour (be prepared!) as the head formed SO quickly and the lip of neck seemed unusually prone to causing spillage. The body is slightly hazy (quite a lot of sludge left in bottle). 5 mins after pouring it still has a 1Cm snow white head.
S- My nose isn't sharp tonight but I get some spicy notes.
T- Lightly spicy into a pretty solid ('meaty') flavour, building into a somewhat hoppy-dry finish
F- I'm really enjoying this. It's like a German weissbrau just with the spicy edge amped up quite a bit. And for 6.5% it feels all that and perhaps some more. Versatile/year-around beer, refreshing but also pretty gutsy.
O- I'd happily drink this again. The balance of punchy/rich/hoppy-dry and interesting palate harmonise in a V nice resulting brew. For a bottle with such a simple and understated lable this is a bit of a gem.
