Tasted from a 16 oz can bought in Las Vegas.
L - Good look for a porter; dark brown to black. Head is thick, with a rocky-looking surface and a dark tan color.
S - The aromas are mostly dark, roasted grain, chocolate and bitter coffee. There is also an unusual, medicinal note that must be from the peppermint mentioned on the label.
T - The comments from the Smell section could be repeated here about the flavors. It is a good, solid imperial porter, but also has a medicinal aspect from the peppermint.
F - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Medium hops bitterness, but astringency from the roasted grains adds to the sensation. The level of alcohol presence seems as expected for the 8% ABV.
O - This is a nice beer in an unusual style. I appreciate the imperial porter, but I can't really identify the peppermint.

Served from the can in a Lagunitas mason jar.
Pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises chocolate syrup, Nutella, buttercream, and some vague ideas of maple syrup and molasses. The taste holds notes of cocoa powder, roasted malts, molasses, and a touch of vanilla bean. The body is a hefty medium, with a light moderate carbonation and an almost chewy feel. Solid, decently sweet milk stout.

There is a malty and chocolaty stout smell.
It's a bold tasting porter that definitely has a lot of chocolate flavor. There is a small amount of bitterness.
It's thin for a porter and has very little carbonation. Smooth like silky chocolate malted milk. Not much of a finish just a little bitter chocolate.
Overall it's pretty good. Like a really really good malty yoohoo. I give it a 4.8 out of 6.

L: Poured from a tallboy can to a pint glass. Had a medium brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.
S: A decent, but not brilliant, aroma of chocolate, malt, cream, and vanilla.
T: Tasted of a bit of malt (a solid backbone of), some light notes of cream (definitely a subtle presence), a fair amount of chocolate (could've used more) and a little bit of vanilla (a fleeting ingredient). This is a pretty good flavor, but it certainly needs a little more power, especially concerning the chocolate. Still, not bad.
F: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.
O: An uneven beer with some good attributes. Worth a look.

A - Dark brown pour that's pushing black in color with thin, but dense caramel colored lacing that's creamy in texture.
S - Roasted cocoa and chocolate malt, with a slight shot of lactose.
T - Roasted cocoa with some light chocolate char. Straight up chocolate from start to finish throughout the sip and finishes with chocolate roast and light sweet lactose to round out any bitterness. Lingering on the palate is chocolate char and some delicate charcoal with very, very minimal peppermint. The peppermint has just about faded but there is a slight bit of cooling in the mouth from the residual peppermint.
M - Big, silky, medium body that's a little thin around the edges with a semi-dry finish.
O - A solid Imperial Porter, the peppermint has faded but the beer stands well by itself without much peppermint interaction.

Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: Imperial Porter
Glass: Ball 16-oz. mason jar
Price: $11 for a 4-pack
From: Mason Ale Works in Carmel Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Dec. 7, 2019
Consumed: Dec. 7, 2019
Misc.: No canned on date
Had a taster of his and really liked it (4.25 on Untappd), so naturally picked up a 4-pack at a reasonable price of $11. Untappd description read, “Our take on liquid Christmas, this Imperial Milk Porter with Peppermint is full of cheer and aims to please.” Back of the can read Cascade, Mt. Hood and Tett. Adjuncts were Lactose, Peppermint and Vanilla. Grain bill was 2 Row, Caramunich, Melanodain, White Wheat, Chocolate Wheat and Flaked Oats. Tasting notes of Peppermint, Rich and Dessert. Enjoy in Evil Santa Mug.
Poured a pitch black color with four fingers of khaki white frothy head. Could see a bunch of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Very good spotty lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled peppermint, vanilla, chocolate, candy can, cacao and a touch of roasty malts. Nothing really else, but this was plenty. A little more roastiness from the can, but still peppermint and vanilla dominating. (Smell - 4.50)
Taste wasn’t quite as good as the nose, but still really solid. Initially reminded me of a hot chocolate with candy cane. Also peppermint, vanilla, cacao, roasty malts and dark chocolate. (Taste - 4.25)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, minty finish. (Feel - 4.00)
Really liked this one. Excellent. (Overall - 4.25)
