Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: New England Double / Imperial IPA
Glass: Firestone 16-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
Price: $4.19
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: June 19, 2021
Consumed: June 21, 2021
Misc.: No canned on date
Grabbed a few Mason Ale Works beers on a recent trip to Windmill Farms. Online description called for “Hazy Double IPA Double Dry Hopped with Enigma, Rakau, HBC 431, and HBC 586.” Somewhat familiar with Enigma, Rakau and HBC 586 (fourth time having this now), but was new to HBC 431, which calls for peaches, berries, and tropical fruits... along with much citrus, herbal, and earthy notes.
Poured a medium yellow hazy color with three fingers of rocky white head. Plenty of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass at different speeds. Perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. Almost perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Initially wasn’t that appealing on the nose. Was getting kind of a wet dog flavor but got a little better as it went down. Got wet dog, pear, banana, guava, mango, peach, apricot and stone fruit. For hops, Enigma and Rakau stood out, but both HBC 431 and HBC 586 also were evident. Even better from the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted a little better than the nose. Got pear, guava, banana, apricot, peach, mango, stone fruit, papaya and herbal. Rakau stood out for hops, followed by notes of Enigma, HBC 431 (looking up hop profile) and HBC 586. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, juicy finish. (Feel - 4.00)
A little weird at first but got a little better as it went down. Very good. (Overall - 3.75)
