500 mL bottle from the LCBO; dated Sept 31 2019 and served slightly chilled. I enjoyed Elora's passion fruit Lodestar last summer, making this one an easy sell.
Pours a cloudy golden-yellow colour, muddied up by lots of clumpy sediment. Situated atop is one finger of foamy white head that fizzles off within a minute or so; a tight collar of froth lives on, with a sparse speckling of lace spattered about in the process. Lots of lemony tartness on the nose, as well as notes of guava, grapefruit, yogurt and berries. Lookin' good so far.
Tasty stuff: it's tart, but its primary flavours of guava and lemon harmonise such that the acidity is not really the main focus. Hints of nectarine, orange and grapefruit lead in to the back end, which features more guava juiciness, as well as a brief peak of lemony tartness preceding a fruity, moderately persistent aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with fairly lively carbonation that remains prickly and brisk well into the session - something I like to see in these fruity sours, as it makes the dregs of the glass a bit more pleasant. That being said, there's so much gunk at the bottom of this particular one that I think I'll pass on that this time around.
Final Grade: 4.01, an A-. In the end I really enjoyed my glass of Lodestar with Pink Guava, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to Ontario BAs seeking out a tart tipple. This one didn't seem as sour as the passion fruit variant, instead leaning (just a bit) more toward the sweet side, particularly at the forefront - though I suppose I'd need to try them side by side to be totally sure. Note to my future self...
