While imbibing at my favorite taphouse, The Burery, I met a wonderful couple who was telling me about this beer. They told me it would be available in a few months and wanted to return my kindness. Several months later, I was quaffing beers at the Anniversary party, and this couple came over to me and said, Jammin, I have your beer. Now, it is time to review it. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 46 degrees. The hard pour did not create any head; thus, there was no head dissipation or lacing on the glass. The color is dark brown with dark rusty mahogany hues, charting at SRM 34, and is opaque. The appearance is average for this style; other than the lack of a head, the color is lovely.
Nosing the glass, I molasses, caramel, toffee, chocolate, leather, wood, char, whiskey, salty air, dark roasted malts, Maillard, smoke, a skosh of fire, and leather. The malty profile is heavy and bready, with malty sweetness and earthiness. The yeast is prevalent and adds a light phenolic compound. The hops are faint with aromas of floral esters, honeysuckle, bay leaves, and a bit of resin.
The flavors start with the massive malt backbone of roasted malts, lightly toasted bread crust, and malty sweetness. As the beer morphs on the palate, more flavors emerge: earthiness, tobacco, wood, char, smoke, fire, Maillard, honeysuckle, leather, caramel, chocolate, coffee, yeast, toffee, molasses, salty air, and resin.
The mouthfeel is chewy and finishes smooth with a bit of warming. The body is heavy with low carbonation.
This beer is stellar! I was unsure what to get when I got this beer; I never had anything from a side project other than the few sips at the Anniversary Party The Burery held. After carefully evaluating this beer, I will put Pure Project on my list. I am elated that they shared this bottle of beer with me; thank you.
