Moonlit Grave

Poured from 16 oz. can into a pint glass. It pours a very dark cola color with a thin, light khaki-colored head and modest lacing. On the nose there is roasted malt, freshly brewed coffee, oatmeal, cola, and a whiff of tobacco smoke. The taste opens with roasted, fairly bitter malt, with touches of oatmeal, coffee, and chocolate. The flavors are mellow. The mouth feel is crisp and clean with moderate carbonation, and the 5.5% ABV allows for very easy drinking. Overall, Moonlit Grave is okay but not memorable.

 

Can to English pint glass.
The appearance was a fantastic looking dark brown very close to black color with a small paper white foamy head swiftly falling off. Barely any lace.
The aroma had some roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, toasted nuts, subtle oatmeal, sweet ash/char and a touch of earthy character.
The flavor leaned towards a roasty earthy sweetness rounding out the corners with some cocoa powder dry coffee to dark fruity tones. Mellow roasty coffee to dark chocolatey notes in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Sturdy carbonation yielding to some dryness and a touch of grip. Oatmeal smoothness? Yes, I think some of that is there. Finishes in the same respect of some oatmeal with roasty coffee tones.
Overall, not a normal American black ale in the sense of the style most perceive. Still, it's quite a nice enough dark beer brewed in a "stout" sort of sense. I'd have again.

Canned 9-18-19
Pours dark, almost black.. with standard tan head. Smell of roasty chocolate, caramel. Taste is light bitterness, light chocolate, fairly sweet caramel. MF is medium smooth, with a bit of carbonation. Overall, a well put together 5.5%, that could fall into the porter/stout range, and still hold up well.

 

 

DATE: October 24, 2019... OCCASION: one step from Friday... GLASSWARE: Hop Devil nonick... pours a jet black body befitting a "moonlit grave" setting... its light brown head is thick, foamy and resilient... heavy scents of toasted oats, while hints of flowers, damp citrus, slight boozy return despite its pedestrian ABV... light smoke and vegetable also... creamy body, smooth and drinkable... surprisingly active at the teeth and lingering at the throat... its body is slightly oily, pleasant and quick in its presence.... mellow toasted oats and malts, sweet and sugary, with the vegetable and charcoal altering some of the landscape... light chocolate and toffee, but it almost needs to be sought to be tasted... plays like an oatmeal stout, with a slight uptick in citric kick... a decent offering this time of year--cool label, for sure--but it doesn't do much of the caramel promised by its label...
