White Elm Barrel Aged Walais Scotch Ale, 9% ABV. Pours blackish brown, with no head. Nose is bourbon and vague sweetness, perhaps some moleasses. Taste follows, malt, light bitterness. Decent mouthfeel, if a bit over-carbonated. Overall excellent, but doesn't stand up to BWB or Central Waters BA Scotch Ale.

12 oz can from brewery poured into smokestack snifter.

Dark caramel color forming into a deep brown with a puffy grey head of 1/2 finger.

Aroma of toffee and burnt sugars, slight peat, molasses, bbq sauce, and raisin bread. Seems to be hidden behind a wall of water though.

Barrel character and heat comes through firstly but is not as loud or as deep as I'd like. Sort of like bourbon cut by a few minutes on the rocks. Notes of woody white oak and boozy sweet bourbon flats - with shots of water, hints of caramel, lite maple syrup, and brown bread. General pale oatmeal, brown bread, and toffee are spread throughout.

Feel is creamy, slightly empty, and brings a nice warming bourbon heat but again cut by time on the rocks.

Overall, I keep reaching for this beer to deliver more with every sip but it's missing the mark by a few inches every time. I guess in the great plains here we are kinda spoiled by Central Waters' BBA Scotch, which is a rite of passage in a way, but I know the base Walais beer is nothing to write home about so perhaps it's more in the recipe than the barrel aging procedure. Regardless, White Elm consistently delivers their product at a more than fair price and for $12.99/4 pack this is definitely worth a shot at least once. If you like it, return to it - if you don't, it's no sweat.
