16oz crowler can, filled on demand at the Whistle Punk taproom. Matt, the owner/head brewer/all around good egg, handed me a sample of this as soon as I walked in, making me quickly figure out what one of the two cans I was going to buy would be.
Poured into a pilsener glass, this was a gorgeous beer: golden amber with fantastic clarity and a nice, off-white head. If one was not thirsty, a pleasant time could be had watching the multitudes of tiny bubbles arc skyward.
Fresh bread up front, with an herbal grassy hoppiness in the background.
When it comes to the taste, the herbal bite of this beer is evenly matched with the bready malt backbone. Very restrained and refined tasting. The malts just barely edge out the hops, except at the swallow, which features an herbal bitterness, but even then the conclusion isn't quite the crisp, pilsenerish zap you might expect, but is a soft yet clean conclusion.
For a 6% beer the body is quite light, with a soft mouthfeel that finishes quite clean.
Man, this is easy to drink! I'm enjoying it before a late dinner, and I'm truly going to regret polishing off this tallboy. Whistle Punk is pretty dependable about nailing their beer styles, and this is no exception. It's just as well that I'm having to drink this at home, as it would be tempting to have several of these, and it's not as low abv as it seems.
