16oz can purchased at Whistle Punk's downtown Spokane taproom on New Year's Eve.
Ultra dark brown color, virtually black, and unyielding to direct light. Decent sized head that is colored somewhere between khaki and mocha.
Nose, at first pour, is redolent of maple syrup and cocoa nibs, in that order. As it warms, the coffee comes out to play and the maple aroma recedes a bit. There's a very slight sour tang in the aroma.
Flavor-wise, this is superbly balanced, with the maple in the lead but dialed way back from what the nose initially suggested. The cocoa nibs add depth to the milk stout flavor without making it a sugar bomb, and the coffee is lightly present, enough to keep the maple syrup from taking over everything. Slightly mineralish tang.
Creamy mouth feel.
This is a milk stout with adjuncts that were used with a light touch, which I consider a hallmark of such beer styles that are brewed by WP. This is a worthy local substitute for the beer with the baby on it.
