At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From the Huron Church Rd. LCBO in nearby Windsor. Packaged August 17/25. My second beer from the Cambridge, Ontario brewery, and for 2025. With Gracie the cat...

Pours a deep dark brown; light brown cohesive head, great retention.

Really strong dark toasted bread; touch of bitter roast and rich like dark fruit.

Taste shows much of the same with more roastiness than the nose; dark chocolate, with a touch of black licorice on the finish.

This beer has some heft to it; feels big but goes down quite quickly. Noticeably dry finish; with a hoppy bitter and roasty bitter finish.

Another really neat beer; this beer is all about leaning as far into toasted without being burnt. It accomplishes that in a beautiful way.

I became elated, seeing this beer in my care package. Thank you, Peter, for this beer. The beer was too excited to see me; it blew up when I opened it; furthermore, after that catastrophe. I finally contained the beer into a pint glass at around 44 degrees. The pour created a frothy and airy two-fingered light tan head. The retention is good, leaving some lacing on the glass. The color charts around SRM 30, dark brown with ruby highlights. The appearance of the beer is average for this style.
Dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, caramel, and a hint of floral are what I smell first. Nosing the beer several more times, I detect earthiness, cooked cereal grains, and slightly phenolic.
Chocolate, coffee, caramel, and roasty grains dominate the palate. Earthiness, floral, and a subtle herbal finish to the beer.
The mouthfeel is slightly dry and tannic. The body is similar to a porter. Finishing smooth.
The beer is stellar. The brewing process is not rushed. Some acrid notes are noticeable; but not unpleasant. Overall, tasty beer; I could consume several of these.

Pours a slightly hazy, deep dark mahogany-brown with an off-white, dense head of about one and a half fingers. It slowly recedes into about a centimetre thick cap. Generous lacing is left throughout the glass as you drink

Roasted caramel malt aromas with a nice nuttiness, a little bit spicy even with hints of coffee. Clean and straightforward, typical of a lager.

Roasted malt up front on the palate, but the coffee notes are more generous here than on the nose. There is a hint of cocoa on the finish as well, joined by a nice dose of tasty cereal grains and a general malty flavour. Some general wooden notes — potentially just me tasting some of the nutty flavours here. Very gentle bitterness throughout, balancing the flavours. Hop flavour following the bitterness is low, but there is a general spicy flavour added to the beer, a little bit floral.

Lighter in body, but I can’t in good conscious describe it as thin bodied, not sure what other folks are feeling there. Pleasant carbonation and thin, tightly packed bubbles create a dense prickly sip on the palate and a very crisp sip. Crisp, grainy aspects of lagers combined with the nice malty, roasted character of ambers and porters, this Ukrainian Dunkel is quite an excellent beer. IMO, better than the score on BA. Worth a try, find a fresh can or get it on draft, this is very good.

I've picked this up at least a couple of times before from my local grocery store. As we're well into fall and moving into the Christmas season, I thought it was time to give this beer a highlight and share my thoughts.

A dark clear brown, cola-like, pour with a robust foamy head that mostly dispersed within a minute or two with plenty of lacing but hangs on well afterwards.

Poured into a tall clear tankard. As a lager, I started with a pour straight from the fridge, but as I continued to sample it as it came up in temperature, it retained its carbonation to the end.

Aromatics are clean, as expected with a lager. Just a hint of roasted malt and espresso.

Very well balanced. Mostly an espresso impression up front, followed by a more nuanced, and quite pleasant toasty caramel aftertaste.

A solid mouthfeel, suiting its dark character. Smooth and still firmly in the lager camp, but creamier.

This makes for a nice transition beer as the weather is turning from fall to winter, and we leave the thirst quenchers behind for more robust fireside-friendly fares.

Dense brown with reddish tints pours with a lively slightly frothy head that quickly disburses. Aroma roasty coffee with malt sweetness. In the body some cocoa smooths out the coffee so not to bitter.

A can of Shevchenko 9 Ukrainian style Dunkel was given to me in Canada in February, 2019. The beer showed a light tan head and a light brown body. The flavor features a nice roasted malt taste. The beer is very mellow and enjoyable. I think this beer exceeds by far any of the Ukrainian dark beers. Most of those are strong Baltic porters (a good example is Lvivske Porter).

Consumed in a glass poured from a 473 ml Canadian pint can, which says "Ukrainian Dunkel" on the side. Apparently, it's named for a striker, who actually wore #7. He did not play a sport I follow, so don't ask me for additional details. The beer features tasty roasted malt with a hint of bittersweet chocolate. I'd buy it again.
