East meets West, and it’s exceptional. Spiced with ginger, nutmeg, orange peel, and jasmine flowers, this sophisticated union of a Belgian white ale with an East Asian rice lager pairs perfectly with both traditional and new-world Asian cuisines.

pours an orange gold body with a chalk white head that has no retention, leaving only splotches of bubble lacing as it settles to faint halo

aroma is quite spicy and floral. the advertised ginger, nutmeg, jasmine, and orange peel show up wonderfully and come together with a yeasty effervescence. flaked lager malt is in there as well.

taste has the spices, but there is an orange marmalade flavor that hits up front and fades with the finish. flavor is pretty lush and citrus oriented, with a soft floral and grassy undertone.

high carbonation and medium-light body. billowy from carbo. finishes dry.

$5 USD per pint @ Orf's 1 year anniversary party.

Pours a clear clean yellow-copper with a sparse off-white head atop. Head dies within seconds.

AROMA: Crushed fresh flowers. Jasmine tea. Fragrant herbal tea-redolent aromatics. 2-row. Ginger. Muted orange peel. (Not finding any nutmeg, overt wheat, or overt rice).

Aromatic intensity is above average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Orange peel and ginger are evident, but unfortunately the Jasmine takes a backseat (why not use Jasmine in primary?). All I get is 2-row maltwise; this fails to showcase wheat or rice adjunct well.

Finishes pleasantly floral, and as it warms I do get some of the rice adjunct after all - but it's not depleted or thin.

Balanced and subtle, playing more to floral and herbal nuance than anything else. I could see this pairing very well with food.

Overcarbonated. Smooth. Wet. Medium-bodied. Not oily, gushed, astringent, harsh, scratchy, or scraping.

OVERALL: Overcarbonation holds it back, but it's obvious there's potential here. Orf is a fairly new brewery, and I'd like to see them steer into the skid of herbed and spiced beers building on the strength of this unlikely ale. It's not terrific, but it does flirt with a unique character that helps set it apart. Well worth trying at $5 a pint, but though it's interesting I wouldn't pay the same for it again.

If Orf is brewing beers this dependable after barely a year of experience on a 55 gallon system, I can't wait to see what he's up to in 5 years.
