A 500ml bottle with a bottled-on date of Sept 2015. A gift from my parents following a holiday in NZ last year. Described on the label as a spiced saison brewed to celebrate Christmas (summer in NZ). The ingredients include ginger, spices and Southern Rata honey, and the label recommends that the beer be consumed within three years of bottling.
A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy reddish-marmalade hue with moderate carbonation and fine sediment. Produces a large head of creamy off-white foam that hangs around before settling as a thick surface layer. Looks good.
S: Aroma of leafy coriander, spice, subtle pollen, yeast, mild caramel malt and a touch of stewed hops. Overtones of honey sweetness. Unusual but quite nice.
T: Tastes of coriander, earthy yeast, faint spice, a hint of grainy malt, stewed hops and a twinge of honey. Mildly sweet finish; little bitterness to speak of. Understated.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and dry, with light carbonation and good body. Faintly astringent upon swallowing, with an aftertaste of coriander, earthy yeast, grain and stewed hops.
O: A decent brew, though certainly not a standard saison. Looks good, while the aroma and flavour have a definite note of coriander, underpinned by yeast, malt and a twinge of honey. Nice body. Perhaps a tad more bitterness to even out the spice, but a pleasant beer nonetheless. Worth sampling if you find yourself in the antipodes.
