i love a good simplistic and rich english porter, and this is that for sure. they have done a nice job with this one, my favorite from my trip here absolutely. looks nice in the glass, dark and shiny, with a little red in the right light and a frothy tan head holding on well. a nose more of a brown ale, chocolate malt and pizza doughy english ale yeast in high proportion. i get less of the bitter roasted barley, but there is a dark chocolate note too that provides the depth. the flavor has more going than the nose, some hops up front which is cool, and the roast comes on late where i thought from the aroma it might not. drip coffee and mildly sweet caramel malt round it out, and the hops are there, very traditional, on the finish. less yeast taste than smell, but its still an english porter. a little light in body, but still with a certain richness because of the sweetness, and a very drinkable pint overall. i liked this place pretty well, and it seems they have the basic styles pretty well under wraps.
