August 6th, 2016 - My very first sampler from Burning Beard is a light looking Pils, with a surprisingly fruity aroma. A glob of apricot smacks the nose, followed by a lemony spritz and white pepper. But while the aroma might be sweet with ripe fruit, the flavor is much more dry, replacing the citrus with wheat notes. A mineral character appears in the mid to late flavor as well for a choice finish.

Really nice Pils! It seems slightly on the hefty side for the style making it a little less sessionsable for me, but I’m enjoying this very much on a summer day!

Served from a can into a pilsner glass.
A: Pale gold/straw in color. Lots of bubbles, two fingers of frothy white head with rocky bubbles. Head dissipates after a minute or so down to a small ring of foam. Lots of lacing left on the glass.
S: Hay, crackery malts, hints of citrus and spiciness.
T: Honey, crackers, small bit of sweetness. Malt hops very nicely balanced, very soft bitterness in the background and malts linger in the aftertaste.
F: Medium carbonation present on the tongue, solid body that clears out off the tongue very quickly. Drinks very easy.
O: Right to style, excellent pilsner.

Had tried this before, but snuck out to Burning Beard to review a few beers. The half pour seemed to be more than eight ounces, probably closer to 10. Anyway, had given this a 4.00 on Untappd on May 22 and said, “Wow. Outstanding pils, creeping on excellent. Pick Six, you up?” Was hoping I was going to give Pizza Port’s Pick Six Pilsner a run for is money as the best pilsner in San Diego.
Poured a pale, clear color with two fingers of frothy white head when I got it. Slow moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass, kind of like a snow globe. World-class layered lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.25)
Smelled hay, grass, corn cereal milk, honey, cracker, sourdough bread and lemon zest. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted better than the nose, but still followed it. Got honey, hay, dry grass, cracker, sourdough bread and lemon zest. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, crisp finish. (Feel - 4.25)
Not quite as good as I remember, but still a very solid pilsner. (Overall - 4.00)
