Again something for about 50 cents from Aldi/Hofer - and still a proper märzen. The good thing is that it has no bad dry bitter aftertaste like some of the others, it is as good as a märzen should be, very typical of that flavor (is it actually a blend of hops?) supported by some slightly sweet malts and sharp(er) carbonation. This is what makes your average märzen and it's all good, all easy to drink. This one was also just great.

500mL can into Steigl mug.

I am a big fan of these Austrian marzen beers and this example is no exception.

Golden in colour, quite heavy carbonation with thick fluffy head which slowly dissolves into the liquid.

Lovely malt flavour some hops, quite sweet at first but with a dry finish.

I could session this all day long, wonderful stuff.

Vereinigte Kärtner Brauereien AG "Villacher Märzen"
on tap @ Hoppalas Bieradies, Wien, Austria
€3,80 for a ,5l glass

Notes: Crystal clear deep gold body. Frothy bright white head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma: Clean, distinct malt (grainy, bready) with a slightly honeyish sweet note and subtle noble hops (mainly floral). The flavor follows with well balanced malt and hops. It's sweetish but not sweet... balanced... malty but dry. Firm bitterness. Fairly good Märzen.

Appearance: gold color, quite light actually for a purported Marzen, fizzy white head, great lacing

Aroma: toasty Vienna malt, with soft malty aroma, slight noble hop aroma detectable

Taste: soft, elegant, smooth malt complexity. Balanced well with noble hop usage.

Mouthfeel: slight carbonation prickle, but otherwise very smooth and easy drinking. Medium-light body

Overall Impression: Easily quaffable and drying on the palate, this Marzen is a great session beer because of these qualities as well as lighter than usual mouthfeel. I had it with some Austrian sausage and pretzels at the Villacher Brewery in Villach, Austria. The food-beer pairing made this beer absolutely fantastic.

The smell is sweet with some bread and a touch of solvents. Some alcohol, hints of canned corn and a touch of neutral bitterness.

The colour is pale gold (16 EBC). The liquid id a bit hazy. The two finger compact off-white head slowly sinks down, leaving some lacing.

The taste is semi-sweet with tired somewhat sour-bitter flavours. The growing sweetness becomes sharp and chemical after a while. Frowsy notes of dishcloth and wet paper. The aftertaste got some bitter flavours, hints of wood and dust.

The carbonation is medium strong, the bubbles sharp. The liquid is light.

Not a very good beer. I wonder if it has been exposed for too much light?

I really do enjoy this one. Its an all around good no frills golden lager.

It an Austrian/German Märzen so it's not akin to what gets passed on as a Märzen at home...its much more like a Helles with a milder hop profile and therefore smoother.

Fluffy well constructed bright white head with a golden yellow body. Aroma is clean and mostly non remarkable. Flavor is also clean, with mild dryness and a non cloying clean finish. A perfect balance.

Like I said, its an all aroudn good beer and goes fantastic with any meaty meal.

Appearance: deep golden colour. Head: white, frothy, moderate size and fair retention. Very clear.
Aroma: sweet malts, grains and lemon.
Taste: light sweet taste, grains and bitter earth hops.
Mouthfeel: slightly dry, medium to high carbonation, low alcoholic strength and medium to light body.
Finish: starts sweet but quickly turns to a lingering bitter aftertaste.

Overall: a nice and simple beer. Nothing extraordinary but leaves its mark.

Just got back from a wonderful vacation not far from this brewery. I have had this beer numerous times in Austria from tap or bottled and it just isnt very good. This beer style is quite different than what most might think of in Germany as a Maerzen. Maerzen is like a Helles in Bayern. What I mean by that is that it is the everyday Bier. In Austria if you order Bier this is what you get
(Maerzen) In Bayern you would have to order a Maerzen by name or else you would get a Helles. Anyways on to the Bier...

I found my self in a unusual position of not drinking Bier because this is all that was offered! It pours a deep gold color and is topped by a medium bubbled head. It smells of malt and a hint of hops along with some lagerery yeast by products. It tastes flat. As in boring. Its overly sweetisch and a is as one dimensional as a Bier can get. No hops, no malt, no nothing. Boring and worth passing....

Just wait to till I post the review of their even worse Dunkles. I will say they do brew better Biers including thier Hausbier!

Next!

Globetrotterette's favorite Austrian beer, it is available in one (only one) of the big supermarket chains in Vienna. Standard brown half liter bottle with a white, gold, blue and red label featuring an etching of a horse drawn cart of kegs under the name. Ascorbic Acid is an ingredient. Best before 5/2/07, I opened it in honor of Austria National Day on 10/26/06.

Pours a slightly cloudy off-orange gold under a big two finger (OK, the pour was probably a bit hard) white head that lingers well, shows some body and generates some very nice lacing. Mild nose of sweet barley and perfumed spicey hops. The mouth is light and very well carbonated. The taste is very nice, with lots of sweet malt to open. The hops are mild and very sweetly floral, with only a very mild bitter bite that lingers nicely but is never obtrusive. Great starter beer and thus far the top of its class in Austria.

Full yellow color, wih golden-oranged reflexes. Compact head, white and creamy. Beautiful.
A lot of grain in the smell, but not heavy and sickly. Some grassy-herbal notes.
In the taste clearly caramel, but here again not too boring. Abundant malt notes.
The aftertaste is a little more sweet, even if the herbal notes are still present.
After all, it is a little boring, maybe.
Average body.
