Hops are hard to come by, especially the ones that are needed for their highest aromatic fruitiness, full succulence in taste and their smooth bitterness. But the brewers at Mile Wide Beer scavenge the beerscape for all the Citra, Azacca and Mosaic that they could find for an imperial status New England styled IPA.
Only reasonably hazy and forged in a golden, amber and peach austere, the beer's frothy white cap plays host to a plethora of citrus, berry, herbal, stone fruit and tropical perfumes. With a rich sensation of honey, caramel and toasted croissant, the early palate opens with a savory and sweet tone to start the flavor show.
Savory sweetness remains toasty and lightly nutty on the middle palate is full support of the fruit flavors that blossom with peach, apricot and bruised oranges. And undercurrent of pink grapefruit and lime complete the citrusy complement while gooseberry and blueberry peak through on occasion. Papaya, pawpaw and mango round out the tropical flavor in a caramelized fashion. A late palate of black tea, currant and damp hemp allows the Mosaic hops to shine in a spicy gin-like bitterness.
Medium bodied and smooth in finish, the creamy textures of the beer result in a malty dry finish with spicy resins and a pep of juniper laden alcohol warmth for a sprucy tone to complete the fruity and herbal story. A medium length aftertaste of caramelized citrus rind, torn pine needles and apricot linger a pinch longer than usual for hazy IPA for an IPA that still has roots on the West Coast.

Crowler filled 10/20/17; drank 10/25/17 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque orange appearance.
A rough pour yielded a big white head; thick lace.
Grapefruit, caramel, mild baking soda & faint orange zest notes in the nose.
Medium thick, sticky mouthfeel.
Caramel & grapefruit flavors up front; mild baking soda notes on the finish. No booze heat.
There's some citrus going on here, but it's almost cloying with an odd aftertaste. Permanent pass.
