650ml bottle (subtitled a 'Caramel Saison'), and the latest release from this science-themed Lethbridge brewing concern. The 'B.S'. of the name is, of course, not what we lizard-brained types would imagine, but rather indicates the use of 'Belle Saison' yeast. Ha ha.
This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy tan head, which leaves a bit of waves crashing on the rocky seashore lace around the glass as it quickly abates.
It smells of biscuity caramel malt, banana cream pie, a mildly estery Low Countries yeastiness, subtle black and white pepper spice, and some tame earthy, leafy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is dry toffee and candied caramel notes, musty Belgian yeast, wet banana chips, muddled rainbow peppercorns, and more understated leafy, weedy, and dead grassy hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its mostly supportive frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and sort of smooth, the yeast showing a form of the unintended meaning of 'B.S.' right about now. It finishes off-dry, the mixed caramel sweetness still keeping its head above water, while the other Saison essences melt away into the night.
Overall, this is one of the better offerings from this still wet-behind-the-ears Alberta brewery - the use of a bigger malt bill to go with this sassy, name-enabling yeast strain is one of their better 'noid moments, thus far. Kind of like a yeasty amber ale, and I mean that in a nice way.
