Chocolate cola color with a 1F head in a Gordon Thistle glass.

Esters, toffee is weaker than in other Scotch ales.
The esters and flavors are enhanced with warming along with the bitterness.

Excellent body, just right for the style. Mild bitterness.

Overall: good Scotch ale. I was looking for more depth.
Pairs well with beef chili.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewery.

A - Poured into a standard pint glass a nice rich chestnut hue with a nice off white head that fades to leave a creamy blanket and light lacing.

S - Aromas of the fresh baked biscuits, lightly sweet malts, caramel, little bit of roast, soft toffee.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with nice toffee notes, the biscuit flavour is light, good little bitter hops on the finish. Nice molasses and brown sugars, little sticky candy sugars.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, little crisp, though a touch sticky.

O - Overall this was a rather solid scotch ale. Possibly my least favorite style, however, Matt makes one hell of a well executed true to style beer!

Yeahhhhhh, I'm going to need you to come in on Saturday. Hmmm. Honestly, I compare all Scotch Ales to Old Chub for better or worse. To me, this tastes like a cross between a quad, brown ale and porter/stout. Sweet up front that gives way to a slight bitter finish. It's not bad, but a complete miss in the Scotch Ale dept.

Draft at the brewery

Nice thick creamy head, semi clear molasses brown

Nose plenty of sweet, toasted biscuity brown malts, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, spices like cinnamon almost, little candy and caramelized sugars

Taste sweet, big big malts, toasted brown malts, caramel, candi sugar and toffee, candy bar toffee a bit nutty, biscuity malts, candy syrup brown sugar and plenty of molasses, and faint dark fruit note. Mild earth herbal hops in the background with mild bitterness, and hint of alcohol
Mouth is heavier bod, bit syrupy, decent carb and touch of booze warmth
Overall not bad, usually not a fan of the style due to it being boring but this was much more complex and fun than usual. Once again Matt creates a great beer from what should be a boring lifeless beer.

16 oz. can dated 01/05/18

Pours dark maroon red with a creamy frothy khaki colored foam head. Smells like toasty bready caramel, roasty molasses, sweet toffee, mild smoke, spice, dried fruits, cherry, fig, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like rich smoky malts, toasty bready caramel, roasty molasses, sweet toffee, spice, dried fruits, cherry, fig, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a really nice Scotch ale.

Before I review, I want to preface by saying that I enjoyed this new beer, it was tasty and very easy to drink at 8.4%; however, I am not sure it exactly matches my expectations of what a true scotch ale is, it seems to be a little less malty, more hoppy, and have a thinner mouthfeel than I would have liked; enjoyable overall and a good addition for the Exhibit A lineup
