Appearance: A half finger of head that laced well, but was pretty average on the retention side of things. The body is an opaque black, as a good stout should be.
Smell: Needed warming to come out, and boasted well roasted malt with a hint of earthiness to it. Potency is better once warming happens, but nothing here is screaming out to me.
Taste: Well roasted malt that stops perfectly at the edge of burnt to start and slowly builds with slight dark chocolate notes a pleasant dryness and an earth hop end with a slight touch of creaminess. Simple, but well done.
Mouthfeel: There is a dryness that is present while you drink it that persists into the aftertaste, it's good up until the very end of the beer when it feels like it has overstayed its welcome. Transistioning is a good slow build, and the carbonation is solid, although it does lack a bit more of the creaminess I'd associate with stout.
Drinkability: Heavy and thick like a good stout should be, but a super heaveyweight it is not. Despite the dry note, it was refreshing and easy to drink. Settles down exceptionally well with no issues on that front.
Final Thoughts: It's been a while single I had just a plain, well made stout without any bell's and whistles, and this is what that beer is. It's really well done, with the heavy thickness that makes you feel it's going to be a sipper, but an interesting mouthfeel and easy drinker that makes it easy to put back. I would certainly say this one has been the pick of the litter for me so far from this brewery. Well done.
