From the bottle and poured into a snifter. This unique
little brew pours a dark mahogany with red highlights
and a modest head of off white foam that fizzles fast
to a thin ring. Nose of dark cherry, plum, raisin, faint
bourbon, and dark brown sugars with touches of
herbal elements. Flavors follow the nose with some
addition of tart cherry and plum, light bourbon,
moderate coffee, leather, oak, and light chocolate
touches. Grape must and vanilla show with warmth.
Decent mouth feel; medium body, light carbonation,
and a lightly dry and slightly tart finish.
Overall, a unique brew but well put together
Cheers

This doesn’t taste very good. Reddish color. Smells like cough syrup. Tastes like dry dead raspberries or strawberry that’s been left out too long and has mold on it. I’m going to force myself to drink it because I want to get a buzz but otherwise this would be a boring drain pour. I can’t even believe they bottled this.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/19/2018. Pours ropy fairly hazy deep reddish orange color, with a small fairly dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lightly tart cherry, plum, berries, peach, pear, red apple, red grape, nutty coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of pepper, chocolate, cocoa, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. A bit too fruity, funky, yeasty, infected feeling aromas; but not overwhelming. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity yeast, coffee, dark/bready malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of slightly tart cherry, plum, berries, peach, pear, red apple, red grape, nutty coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of pepper, chocolate, cocoa, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Very mild herbal/roasted coffee bitterness; and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of cherry, plum, berries, peach, pear, red apple, red grape, nutty coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, chocolate, cocoa, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of ruity yeast, coffee, dark/bready malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; with a solid malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and no cloying flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and yeast/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and slightly sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is a very good barrel aged Belgian dark ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, coffee, dark/bready malt, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the minimally bitter/spicy/drying finish. Other than the weird infection feeling nose, taste was fine. Well balanced Belgian yeast, fruity/nutty coffee, and malts; with solid Bourbon barrel presence. A very enjoyable offering, and nice style example otherwise. Might have some cross contamination from their sours.

Tasted in a snifter from draft at Light the Lamp Brewery on September 15, 2018. Bourbon barrel aged Belgian dark with four letter word coffee. Too much coffee for my tastes.

Had on tap. Poured nicely but color with more light and clear than expected for style. Good amount of foam lacing however. Smell was actually very pleasant, with dark belgian malts and yeast pairing nicely with bourbon and coffee. The taste however was a complete mess. Tasted like burnt coffee grounds and wood with yeasty whiskey. Not great. Body was a bit watery and dull. Started so promising

a belgian dark ale aged in bourbon barrels with locally roasted coffee. i had really high hopes for this, not enough belgian beers with coffee, and not enough belgian beer in barrels that isnt sour, but this didnt really get me stoked, and ended up being the least appealing of all the beers we had in here. its a bit murky but very lively from the tap, and smells like good coffee meeting a light dubbel, with that abbey malt richness and some deeper, earthy, almost ashy roast to it. pleasing, with hints of raisins and whiskey too, but the barrel aspect is subtle here, and i dont get a ton of oak on it, same in with the taste, the barrel character is decidedly underdeveloped, which may be intentional in a lighter abv beer, but i kind of miss it. the coffee serves to balance the malt sweetness and weight in taste and feel, with a little acidity cutting in and a bitter cocoa note to it along with the roast. its sort of simple for being so interesting on paper, and the belgian yeast is kind of tame too, a little fruity esters pulling up faint whiskey and dried fruit, but its mellow for sure. smooth feel, medium body, a tad under carbonated, this one overall just didnt live up to expectations, and from a quality and execution standpoint was the least impressive beer we had at the otherwise very impressive whiner taproom! this should be better than it is...
