3/28/26 - (Whiner Beer Taproom) (Chicago, Illinois) Draft Notes: 16 oz $5 4.7% Noble Kolsch.
Appearance: 16 oz draft in a nonic glass yields a yellow beige faintly unfiltered base. Bright white fine bubble head clings around the rim with a medium island floating in the middle. Carbonation dies out quickly. 3.75
Aroma: Faint malt and cracker after a few attempts. 2.75
Taste: Stronger taste, cracker, pepper, salt, lemongrass, a bit of honey, which isn’t an additive. Digging. 4.0
Mouthfeel: Slightly gentle carbonation more felt than seen at this stage. Light and easy, medium body, perceived honey adds creaminess. Cracker salt honey finish. Nice. 4.0
Overall: Beyond the faint to nil aroma, this is a solid Kolsch which I’m glad I came across today. Sad it’s likely my last go at this with the closure here tomorrow. 3.75

had higher hopes for this, was pumped to see it on draft, love the beer these guys make, and am stoked to have them for sale in idaho now, but this doesnt present like its been handled well, or like its very fresh, or well refined, not what i have come to expect from these guys, and if its supposed to be some sort of farmhouse kolsch or something, which they dont seem to suggest, i dont think it works well, the fermentation isnt flattering for the style, and this came in way under expectations for me. not real clear from the tap, a muted yellow tone, and with a quick fading head that falls down to about a quarter inch, a bit thin but hanging on. it smells and tastes a little unclean, not quite mop water, but without any real crispness at all, part of it seems like malt fade, but most of it is in the ferment for me. there is some german character to this, dusty cereal pils type malt at the core, minerals, even old world lager vibes, but its at once missing something for me, which are hops on the back end and some actually snappy texture, and also has something that doesnt belong, which is some fermentation weirdness, a sort of stressed yeast ester, also enough sweetness where it seems incomplete, an almost belgian note too, just weird. i get some herbal hop character as it warms but its not as refreshing as it needs to be for the style for all the aforementioned reasons, and this stands as one of my least favorite beer i have ever had from whiner, although some blame could be on account or distributor here, tough to say...
