a nicely executed but extraordinarily basic milk stout here. this is pretty textbook really, with the milk sugars giving it a nice finishing sweetness to balance the roasted grains that turn a little bitter later on. its not too sweet, and has excellent balance. the lactose brings a slight vanilla note that really jives with the coffee characteristics of the dark grain, but this is not uncommon, and in the end, this beer could have been made by any number of upstart american craft breweries, and there is very little here to set it apart or make it memorable. lighter body than i like in the style, they could boost that up a bit, but the carbonation is nice and i like how long the drink is, not finishing for awhile, with pleasant roasted and dark chocolate flavors left after the swallow with a little of the sweetness. i thought the beers i had in here were all quite well made, but all on the safe side. they should spike this with coffee, add a heap of oats to the mash, do something to make it distinct. its a great base for some further experimentation though...
