2018 vintage, bottle number 554/700, 750ml bottle purchased to go from the Brewery in the before days (Jan 2020). Somewhere around $20.
Appearance: Deep brown with an amber clarity. Holds a solid halo of white foam with wisps in the center. Foam slowly slides off the edges of the glass showing off some serious legs.
Aroma: Fig, plum, rum soaked raisins, heady whiff of alcohol, black bread, solid malt base.
Taste: They didn't skimp on the malt bill, this is very full bodied, lots of sugar, toffee, the hint of butterscotch, all of that supporting the fruity fig, raisin, almost cherry juice, but no fruit skin tannins, and almost no hop flavors. What is there hop wise maybe citric? Maybe earthy? I'm reaching, the beer isn't cloying even with all that sugar, but there aren't any hops coming through, just supporting.
Mouthfeel: Heavy body, almost medium carbonation, on the fizzy side for a Barleywine but by no means excessive. Full chew, oily finish, slowly warming to the edge of hot... maybe a bit over that edge.
Overall: Big bomber, big beer, big price tag. Going to give it a big win! No off flavors, although there could be 8 serious flaws in this beer and they are all buried under a dump truck of malt. Was impressed by my visit to the brewery, wish I lived a little closer. I recommend trying out anything you see, and if you like it, then look for one of these beasts!
