473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Sep 9 2022 and served barely chilled.
Pours dark mahogany-brown with ruby red highlights, topped with roughly two fingers of pillowy, foamy, light beige-coloured head that lasts for a little over five minutes. A lumpy cap and creamy collar remain, with a respectable swath of lace flung about in the process - looks normal enough. Nothing surprising on the nose: roasted malts, cocoa, date fruit and molasses, with hints of vanilla, booze fumes and oatmeal.
The flavours are deceptively low-key and mellow for its strength, making for a potentially dangerous beer. Cacao nibs, cocoa powder and date fruit at the forefront, with coffee, molasses, oats and vanilla not far behind. Hints of roasted grains, licorice, herbal hops and bitter coffee grounds develop at the finish, trailing off into a slightly warming aftertaste; suggestions of cocoa persist well after each sip. Full-bodied, with low carbonation that limply nudges the palate; the soft, satisfying mouthfeel might be this brew's biggest 'pro', but masking that 10.5% so effectively is also impressive.
Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. Really great imperial stouts always have some sort of 'wow' factor(s) going for them, but Laura Secord's Long Trek never crosses that chasm: its cacao nib and coffee additions just aren't intense enough to propel this brew into that upper echelon of must-try stouts. One serious point in its favour is that it's *unbelievably* smooth for 10.5%, with very well-integrated booze - so if you're really just looking for a big imperial stout to use as a night cap, there's no reason not to give this a shot. But if you're looking to have your mind blown? You might need to keep looking.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $5.95CDN. Canned September 9, 2022.
Appearance -
Smell - Chocolate, molasses, Some roasty elements. Good depth of aromatics, if not the most intense.
Taste - Some dark chocolate, some roasty flavors and a touch of milk chocolate sweetness afterwards. A chocolate stout but not overdone and pretty balanced flavor wise. Would like a little more intensity for an imperial stout however. Booze quotient well hidden.
Mouthfeel - Not super slick, but does have a nice lush and viscous feel. Carbonation is low.
Overall - This is a good chocolate imperial stout, a little more wildness with the nose and taste in terms of intensity could make this a great imperial stout. Enjoyed it and the brew was balanced, so well worth the tipple if Chocolate imperial Stouts are your thing.
