473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Henderson / Bench winter mixed pack collab. Dated Oct 7 2023 and served barely chilled.
Pours a dark, oily brown-black colour with burgundy-red highlights; one finger of soapy, tan-coloured head lasts for two or three minutes before being reduced to a tight collar and a few wisps on the surface. Modest lace deposition with a swirl of the glass - looks alright so far. Sweet, confectionery-like aroma of caramel/toffee, cherries and raisin, with noticeable ethanol fumes; suggestions of herbs, dark chocolate and grape must.
The flavours are a little more straightforward - I'm getting caramel, treacle, raisin and toasted malts, with suggestions of plum, cocoa, red licorice candy and herbal hop bitterness. Boozy-sweet on the back end, with treacle and dark fruits dissipating into a warming aftertaste that numbs the palate ever-so-slightly. On the fuller side of medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, soft mouthfeel. Fair drinkability for the style, but one can was more than enough for me.
Final Grade: 3.6, a B grade. Rennie's Scotch Ale is a serviceable, no-frills strong ale that has plenty of room for improvement. I don't think this is a *bad* beer, but its flavour profile is lacking in both depth and variety - it really just comes off as too sweet and slightly too boozy. Neither of those are bad things in and of themselves, nor are they unusual for a wee heavy - the problem is that there's little to no nuance or refinement beyond that sweet/strong dichotomy. How about giving me some peat, or some roastiness - anything other than sweet malts? Adorable self-grooming tuxedo cat label art notwithstanding, Rennie's is a thoroughly average Scotch ale that does not stand out in its field, so I can't offer it much more than a lukewarm, half-hearted recommendation.
