We still remember well the first time we saw them, the tall glasses of Hefeweizen in the vast Bavarian beer gardens, the summer sun glowing through them under the linden trees. Many years later, here in Brooklyn, our very first batches were Hefeweizens, and we loved them so much that we brewed nothing else for six months. And yet, even as we labored happily and brought much joy to the people, we recalled the legend of even better times.
Once, long ago, there was a wheat beer so mighty that even the linden trees bowed in its presence. Known as Der Weizenhammer, this beer brought the warmth and sunshine of summer to its greatest heights and sustained the people as they prepared for a bountiful harvest. For ages, Der Weizenhammer was lost, but now it has been re-forged here in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Weizenhammer stands tall in the glass, radiating a hazy, deep golden hue and raising a pillowy white foam as beautiful as the songs of old. A big, brash weizenbock, the Weizenhammer smashes in with a rush of bold, juicy flavors and a bright zing of hops, then veers to a surprisingly dry finish. Another sip will beckon.

Brooklyn Brewery "Weizenhammer"
on tap @ Ship & Mitre, Liverpool, UK on 1 May 2015
£4 / pint
Notes: Listed at 7.4% ABV. Typical hefeweizen appearance but not cloudy, just hazy (perhaps it's been sitting). Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma: smoky pork, phenolic, subtle fruit. Flavor: sweetish, apple, some bacon, Beechwood. Stiff, moderate bitterness. Lingering fruit and smoke in the finish. Superbly done!

Cloudy straw color, this came with a small ring of a white head.
This comes across as an imperial hefe style weizenbock. Big, bruised banana, cloves, moderately sweet bubblegum, and just a trace of warm toffee at the finish to let you know you are in imperial territory.
The body is full and lush of course, as expected. This a real treat overall, perfect for a January evening. Brooklyn does wheat right.

Very cloudy as I'd expect. Not much head and no lace which I didn't expect. Whitish, yellow color.
Banana and wheat are the dominant smells.
Semi sweet flavor with a bit of a taffy taste. Said banana is stronger here and the wheat really stands out. Decent body with a muted carbonation for the style. Some yeast and sourness show up in the swallow.
This is not my favorite style, but I believe this to be better than most real wheat beers.

On draft at the Pour House in NJ. A turbid yellow amber with small head. Exceptionally fruity aroma like a ripe banana. Attracted a fleet of fruit flies which hovered over the beer. The taste is like a bananas foster, ripe bananas, caramelized sugar and vanilla. A smooth and tasty weizenbock, but not one of the best available. When consuming a high ABV beer like this you should be blasted with an explosion of flavor, not a mellow smooth drink. If it was 5% ABV it would be outstanding but at nearly 8% ABV it is just good.

an enormous wheat bock here, delicious and flavorful with a real sturdy wheat malt base, creamy in texture, with a wonderful banana yeast complexion. there is more sweetness here than i like in the style, incompletely digested by the yeast, which is so delicious though, dessert banana cream, so nice. i wish it was a little dryer, the sugar makes it hard to drink much of, and adds more body than we need here. a little vanilla in there, and again the yeast, its delicious. the alcohol comes out too just a bit, getting more intense when it warms up, but it belons in the style i think, at least a little. brooklyn has a way of making their beer all unique. this is very them, it fits with what they do and has their unusual flare to it. although i think its far from perfect stylistically, i like where it deviates.

Not being a wheat beer drinker, but I would rate it like a typical Belgian with a banana aftertaste.

Pear, must, banana, and Belgian yeast form the aroma. Flavor is somewhat fruity at the base, with green apple, banana, and pear accompanying a lightly bready malt backbone. Fairly flavorful and an enjoyable beer.
